, the u.s. investing millions of dollars into a new center designed to improve batteries that power iphones to from eye phon electric cars. they've made a breakthrough in green technology that could turn a trash to cash. >> from a grocery store to garbage dump, there is a global glut of plastic bags. 100 billion are discarded each year in the u.s. alone, just 13 percent are recycled and the rustling on lawns and in landfills for centuries. craig reddix hundreds of years to degrade. >> they want to end all that. the scientists at this laboratory have found a way to turn the bags into batteries. >> there are many benefits. a very important product. >> in the past, this were not able to mix different kinds of plastics, and he found a way around that. the cuts the bags up and stuffed them into a metal tube, as the catalyst, and he'd sit to 700 degrees celsius. then in a few hours he has a black powder and then carbon, it sells for more than gold. in a few minutes each and converted into this watch battery. all the green technology in the world does not do any good unless people use it.

community to curb the flow of arms into syria. another member of the u.s. senate has decided to step aside. republican mike johanns of nebraska announced today he will not seek a second term next year. in a statement, he said he wants to spend more time with his family, after spending 32 of his 62 years in various offices. johanns is the fifth senator to announce plans to retire next year. a hall of fame figure in pro basketball, former los angeles lakers owner jerry buss, died today. he'd battled cancer for months. buss ran the lakers for nearly 34 years, and they won ten n.b.a. championships during that time. along the way, he brought in star players from kareem abdul- jabbar to magic johnson to kobe bryant. he was also one of the first owners to create his own cable tv network, and sell the naming rights to his arena. jerry buss was 80 years old. those are some of the day's major stories. now, back to judy. >> woodruff: and we turn to this weekend's protests and the big debate over the extension of an oil pipeline from canada into the u.s. as the u.s. tries to navigate between clean ene

% of the u.s. housing market. so that will be a critical read on recovery in the housing market and also a fresh look the consumer price index. we know that gas prices are squeezing. gas prices are 20 cents high they are week than they were the same time last year. 20 cents higher. and you're taking less out of your paycheck because of payroll tax holiday expired. for those of you really worried about gas prices in new york and chicago. you're going to hit $4 a gallon earlier than we ever have in the year. so brace yourself there. also brace yourself if you're a federal worker. you're facing a furlough, unpaid days off. you can blame the sequester. a controller for the office of management and budget said this won't happen until after march 1st. that's when the massive spending cuts begin if congress doesn't act the sequester. federal employees must give a 30-day notice before furlough. unions that represent the workers right now having a big part in how that's going to happen and when. but there are 2.1 million federal employees that fall under this cost cutting measure. so tough choice
